By the end of the 20th century, drilling had expanded into the sea offshore and a large portion of onshore petroleum had been depleted. Specialists and skilled workers flocked to Baku by the end of the 19th century. The city had more than 3, 000 oil wells by 1900, of which 2, 000 were used to produce oil for industrial use. Before World War II, Baku was one of the biggest centers for the production of oil industry machinery. Who would control the Baku oil fields was the subject of the World War II Battle of Stalingrad. Baku produced half of the world’s oil supply fifty years prior to the conflict.
With the development of the massive Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli field (Shallow water Gunashleri by SOCAR, deeper areas by a consortium led by Bank), the Shah Deniz gas field, the expansion of Sangachal Terminal, and the BTC Pipeline, Baku’s oil economy is resurging.
The Baku Stock Exchange is the largest stock exchange in Azerbaijan and, by market capitalization, the biggest in the Caucasian region. There are a sizable number of multinational corporations with their headquarters in Baku. The International Bank of Azerbaijan, which employs over 1, 000 people, is one of the more well-known organizations with its headquarters in Baku.
